Norton AntiVirus keeps disabling?

I have to keep on turning auto-protect back on, why is it doing that? What can I do so it just stays on?

You've probably been infected by a trojan, which gives instructions to disable auto-protect. There are quite a few trojans that try and disable anti-virus programs. I suggest you do a CD boot and scan for viruses, trojans, worms and rootkits.

I've stopped using Norton, not because it was rubbish (it's actually really good) but because it hogged at lot of the resources to keep it running in the background and bootup increased by double.

AVG and Anti-Rootkit from grisoft are okay, as long as you scan regularly and update the software, since the free one doesn't automatically update to the latest virus signatures.

NOD32 is particularly good but you will need to purchase a licence to continue using it after 30 days.

There is one more highly recommended anti-virus software, but the name escapes me.
