How do I remove the protection from protected I-tunes songs?

I am trying to change the format to some songs that I bought from I-tunes but I cant because they are protected auto files. I cant even play the music on my friemds computer because they are protected and I have to athorize his computer to play my songs. How do I remove the protection?

The only time I've needed to do this, I've burnt the files to a CD and then ripped it. You should be able to convert the files you get to another format.
