is it that women choose to sit so close to the steering wheel? I notice this ALOT, even from women that are not by any means too short to reach the controls. I've had driving instructors tell me that sitting too close to the wheel can interfere with emergency manuevers (think body mechanics and that stupid arguement about the breasts of women golfers interfering with their swing), but I know for a fact that when you sit that close (6 to 8 inches), there isn't enough space for the airbag to deploy in the event of a crash. In the mechanics of a crash, you're supposed to hit the fully deployed airbag to minimize injuries -- if you hit the airbag as it's deploying it can add to your injuries, it might as well not even be there.
I don't mean for this to come across as sexist, that's not my intention. I'm just not sure if these women realize the airbag will not protect them when they're that close to the steering wheel. I do understand sometimes it's about comfort, but what about safety?

I have also seen people do this. Sitting too close to the steering wheel will cause the airbag to CRUSH you in an accident.
In general, I think people just "don't get it" when it comes to auto-safety.
