I was in an accident a few months ago and I heard recently that the insurance company of the person at fault has to pay for new baby seats since the seats have "served their purpose" by protecting the children. Anyone else have experience with this? Can I get the insurance compant to pay for new seats?

The only state I know of with mandatory car seat replacement laws is California. If you live in CA and are involved in an accident you must replace your car seat, cut the straps, and turn the seat over to your nearest CHP office. The car seat must have been in use (a child sitting in it) in order to claim a replacement. Also, this is not restricted to 3rd party carriers; if you have collision on your own policy you can claim it there too.
Outside of CA, insurance companies handle this according to their policy. You should check with yours 1) to see if there is a legal requirement for your state (which they would have made you aware of) and 2) what their policy is. Reimbursements are just that...you buy it, they reimburse you for the same or similar one you had at the time of the accident.

If the seats were in use during the time of the accident- you shouldnt have a problem with them replacing them. In the big scheme of things... it isnt going to bother them to replace your 50 dollar car seat. Just call and ask nicely and im sure they will be fine with it.
I have lost track of how many car seats I have replaced during my career. Most insurance companies don't argue this situation but like any other claim you need to document that the seat has been replaced.
If the carseat was in use at the time of the accident then the at fault party's insurance may consider paying for another carseat of similar value to the one you already have - if you feel it needs to be replaced. It is up to the insurance company as to how much they will pay.
Has the insurance already settled with you? If so it's probably too late. But yes, you can ask they replace the car seat, even now.
Carseats should ALWAYS be replaced when involved in an accident even if the insurance does not cover it. Unless you have already settled your claim, the insurance should cover it. You will have to go buy new ones and furnish the company with receipts for reimbursement. But do it regardless of if they pay or not, for your childrens safety.
