How do i paint a bike frame?

i am trying to paint my mtb with enamel spray paint. i have a semi-gloss black that i tried on an old frame and it looks great. i will add some pewter accents around the bends too.

is there any clear coat i can apply to protect the finish? the dude at the (auto) shop said clear coat is just paint so it will still chip off or scratch as easily as the paint under it. plus, some brands will yellow. what can i use and were can i buy it? what do bike manufacturers use? (besides powder coating, what about anodization?)

i want the toughest stuff on the market, i dont want my work to go to waste.

try using flat black instead. it'll look bitching bad *** and be way easier. tremclad makes a decent one. but if you're set on a glossy finish, listen to the first guy.

good luck

you have too much time on yer hands
Wow.

First, you shouldn't use enamel unless you have it professionally applied and baked on. Spray cans are formulated to be used in a wide range of temperatures and humidities so they never dry "just right". Even if you got fancy with some tin foil and spotlights you would probably only end up with an even softer finish.

Here is a quick (sort of) process to follow:
